How to Save Electricity (and Money)
Some ideas on what you can do around the house to save electricity, and thus money.
Defrost in Fridge If you are planning to defrost some frozen food, place it in the fridge. It will take longer to defrost but it will help to keep the fridge cold and saves you a little electricity. But remember, the food will defrost much slower so you might need to get it out the day before you wish to use it.
Turn Down Thermostat Simply turn down your thermostat by a few degrees. If it gets a little chilly then put on a sweatshirt and don't turn up the heating. If you are watching TV get yourself a blanked and I am sure you will be cosy warm.
Lights Turn lights off when you don't use them. Especially when you are out. Also replacing your normal light bulbs with energy saving ones will help you to keep the cost down. They might look expensive to buy but they actually last 8-10 times longer as a normal light bulb.
No Standby If you turn off your TV, DVD, Radio or any other equipment which has a standby function turn it off completely. In standby mode these appliances still use a lot of electricity.
Hibernate Your Computer Set your computer to hibernate after 10 minutes of inactivity. This means if you leave the computer for only a minute but then not get back for a while the computer will turn itself off.
Change Computer Monitor If you are still using one of the old big computer monitors replace them with an flat screen monitor. Not only are they using less than half of the electricity but they also look better.
Wash Colder When you do your laundry turn the temperature down. This will get the clothes as clean as higher temperature cycles and will protect your clothes better.
Avoid Using a Dryer Why not air dry your clothes? It's completely free and the sun will even get out stains which you wouldn't get out by washing them. You can hang out your clothes even if it is a bit chilly. They will sill get dry.
Unplug Chargers If you have a charger for your mobile phone, mp3 player or similar device, unplug the charger if you are not charging them. They will still use electricity.
Turn Off Oven Earlier If you have an electric oven turn it off 5 minutes before the food is done. The heat will stay in the oven and will continue to cook your food.
Keep Fridge and Freezer Closed If you open your fridge or freezer close them as soon as possible. The warm air will get in and warm up the appliance which will have to cool it down again. |
